Proxim Wireless offers a high-speed mobility technology called FastConnectTM which enables Tsunami® Point to Multipoint platforms to deliver high bandwidth real-time backhaul to enable a breadth of on-the-move applications such as onboard WiFi, CCTV, and Computer Based Train Control.
How it works
When a vehicle is fitted with a Proxim Subscriber unit (SU) and is traveling between wireless network coverage areas with a connection to a Proxim Base Station unit (BSU), the SU terminates the session with the current BSU and registers with another or the next BSU.
The Fast Roaming feature continuously monitors the Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) and current data rate on the vehicle SU for all the frames received from the connected BSU. When the SNR or Data rate breach a lower threshold, the SU scans for the next BSU with better signal strength. When there are multiple BSU options, the SU connects to the BSU with the most robust signal.
Proxim FastConnect™ provides MAC level connectivity to the SU as it roams from one BSU to another. FastConnect supports session persistence through extremely fast handoffs and the buffering of data during the actual handoff period. The combination of fast handoffs and buffering means an application experiences zero packet loss during a hand over from one BSU to the next, a critical feature for applications such as onboard video security, or VoIP sessions.
