Proxim Wireless Launches 802.11ac Wi-Fi Access Point

Re-Invigoration of ORiNOCO® Product Line Continues
Download PDF +

Silicon Valley, CA, June 1, 2015 - Proxim Wireless Corporation (OTC Markets: PRXM), a pioneer and global leader in advanced Wi-Fi, point to point (PtP), and point to multipoint (PtMP) radio systems, today announced the launch of its enterprise-class ORiNOCO® AP-9100 wireless access point.

The AP-9100 is the latest result of Proxim’s re-investment in its ORiNOCO product line as the second new ORiNOCO product introduced to the market this year. Earlier in 2015, Proxim announced its ORiNOCO USB-9100 Wi-Fi Adapter with dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac support. Proxim has a pipeline of additional WLAN products it expects to introduce in the second half of 2015.

The AP-9100 is initially targeted for SMB and mid-size enterprises, enabling network teams to unwire and extend their LANs with gigabit speeds at price points that make enterprise-class 11ac technology affordable. The AP-9100 is software-upgradeable to operate in controller-based environments, which will expand its application into the large enterprise market with the expected launch of the ProximVision controller later this year. The AP-9100’s two radios operating in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz spectrums will enable enterprise network administrators to meet the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) operating flexibilities demanded of enterprise networks. Also, the AP-9100’s VLAN tagging and multiple Virtual Access Point capabilities will allow the easy integration of the product into existing enterprise LANs.

"With the introduction of the AP-9100 and USB-9100 products, I am very confident that we offer excellent 11ac wireless LAN solutions for organizations of all sizes,” said Greg Marzullo, President and CEO, Proxim Wireless. “The AP-9100 comes both able to operate as a standalone client as well as being ‘controller-ready.’ What this means is it has been designed to operate in a controller-based network with a simple software update expected to be available later in 2015. This ability to operate either as a ‘fat AP’ or ‘thin AP’ will give maximum flexibility for network configuration. The AP-9100 and USB-9100 together augment our Wi-Fi presence and demonstrate our commitment to deliver high capacity, high performance solutions."

The ORiNOCO AP-9100 product is designed to address demanding enterprise needs and fuses the next generation wireless technology - 802.11ac - with feature-rich ORiNOCO firmware, delivering gigabit connectivity with rigorous security and improved manageability. Specific features include:

Rich Feature Set: The ORiNOCO AP-9100 product is an OFDM-MIMO 3x3:3, 802.11ac dual radio access point. One radio operates in the 2.4 GHz spectrum based on 802.11b/g/n standards, while the other radio – an 802.11a/n/ac radio – operates in the 5 GHz spectrum. In addition to the expanded range of devices supportable by the network due to those two operating frequencies, the two radios combine to provide an aggregate data rate of 1750 Mbps. The AP-9100 delivers this performance from a small 6.7” x 6.7” x 1.7” (170 x 170 x 44 mm) enclosure, making it among the smallest 11ac APs in the market. Additionally, the AP-9100 is plenum rated, allowing it to be installed and completely concealed in suspended ceilings. It supports the latest 802.11e EDCA standards to ensure seamless video streaming and VoIP services and includes 802.11h Spectrum and Transmit Power Management for improved BER and 802.11k and 11r Radio Resource Measurement/Management.

The ORiNOCO® Advantage: Built up over 20 years of market experience, the ORiNOCO firmware offers excellent advanced wireless technology implementations. It supports Layer 3 services such as VLAN via RADIUS and DHCP. It also supports up to 8 Virtual APs (VAPs) per radio for added network flexibility. It also enables mapping of VLANs to the VAPs.

Easy Manageability: AP-9100s can be managed by the ProximVision Network Management System (PV NMS). The PV NMS is a powerful network management solution that provides a complete view of the network and at the same time enables seamless granular device-level monitoring. It offers a plethora of features ranging from inventory management and customizable graphics to device level statistics, rogue AP identification and diagnostic reports, not to mention advanced fault management features with email alerts and more.

Hybrid Architecture: The ORiNOCO AP-9100 product is an access point that can operate in a standalone configuration or in a network managed by the ProximVision controller, to be launched later this year. The PV controller will empower IT teams to centrally monitor as well as manage networks including wireless resource optimization, streamlined policy enforcement, software configuration and management, and other security access features.

Robust Security: ORiNOCO AP-9100 products support IEEE 802.11i, that provides AES-128 encryption and mutual authentication based on IEEE 802.1x, ensuring the highest level of security for an enterprise. AP-9100 products also offer secure remote management via SSL, SSH, and SNMPv3.

Availability: AP-9100 products are available for order now.
