Enable Better City Government Collaboration
The Challenge
Governments at county and state levels comprise many different offices and departments throughout the community. Often built decades ago, these buildings are not readily equipped with broadband network access to connect them. Proper government operation is facilitated through regular communication among departments and access to important information. What if Amber Alerts could be linked to parking enforcement? What if building permits were submitted and approved online, then were easily accessible to both tax assessors and building inspectors with handheld devices? It takes an accessible city network to make it happen – and cost and right-of-way are the gating factors.
The Solution
Only wireless technology can overcome the obstacles to a metropolitan area network for city government. The cost of leased lines makes city-wide connectivity an impossible project – especially if streets must be dug up to install new fiber. Wireless allows high-speed, highly reliable and secure connections between city buildings. Proxim point-to-point bridges create a wireless ring, and multipoint systems fan out bandwidth to buildings. Installation of wireless device can be done in weeks rather than years (compared with fiber optics). Replacement units can be deployed in a few hours, making wireless MANs well-suited to disaster recovery scenarios.
As an added benefit, a Wireless MAN in a community can be used to offer low- or no-fee Internet access to home users, or bandwidth can be sold to local businesses to defray network costs.
