San Jose, CA, June 21, 2007 – Proxim Wireless Corporation, a global pioneer of end-to-end solutions in Wi-Fi® mesh, WiMAX, MeshMAX™, WLAN, and wireless backhaul and wholly owned subsidiary of Terabeam, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRBM), today announced it is working with Sakthi PURA and Proxim partner Microsense Pvt. Ltd. to supply rural areas and remote villages in the Pollachi region of India with wireless broadband connectivity to provide tele-education, healthcare, and other information and content.
The Sakthi PURA project (Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) is an initiative championed by the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to assist in the development of India's rural communities by providing reliable communication networks. The goal of the PURA initiative is to benefit the more than two-thirds of India's population living in rural areas. These communities require wireless links with quality of service (QOS) for voice and video at distances up to 25km over hilly terrain with no line of sight. A minimum throughput of 2Mbps is required for the longest links. The PURA initiative also encompasses, among other things, greater provision of roads and power, more professional institutions, and realizing the best value for products and services of rural people.
Proxim's Tsunami™ MP.11 base stations and subscriber units are being deployed because they are cost effective and have been proven to provide reliable broadband access with QOS, regardless of regional challenges such as vegetation and uneven, hilly territory limiting line of sight visibility.
"The Sakthi PURA deployment is a strong endorsement of our WiMAX technology and product line," said Lionel Chmilewsky, Senior Vice President, Proxim International. "A robust wireless connection that meets performance and reliability requirements is essential in India's uneven, hilly terrains. We are pleased Sakthi PURA and Microsense have identified Proxim as their partner in this effort."
Drawing on Proxim's leadership in broadband wireless and WiMAX, the Tsunami MP.11 product family of ruggedized base stations, and indoor and outdoor subscriber units, have been developed as a platform to enable WiMAX capabilities for license-free frequency bands. Awarded a 2006 Product Innovation Award by Frost & Sullivan for "Truly Innovative WiMAX Solutions," the Tsunami MP.11 Series supports converged video, voice and data transmission in both fixed and mobile applications.
