| New Version of Proxim Broadband Wireless
Access Solutions Enables Industry-First Roaming for Mobile Applications
Release 2.0 of Tsunami MP.11 family
Delivers Roaming Capabilities, Improved Density, to Provide Mobility,
Ease Installation and Reduce Costs
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 17, 2004 - Proxim Corporation,
a global leader in wireless networking equipment for Wi-Fi and broadband
wireless networks, today announced a significant new software release
for its popular Tsunami MP.11 family of point-to-multipoint broadband
wireless solutions, that enables a new class of mobile applications,
delivers improved network service and helps reduce the complexity
and cost of broadband wireless network installation and management.
Designed for wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs), municipalities,
public safety and transportation organizations and enterprises,
Release 2.0 enhances the Tsunami radios with a unique, industry-first
roaming capability, enabling a wide range of new mobile applications.
With this new roaming feature, Tsunami MP.11 Subscriber Units can
now be placed on moving vehicles where they can roam between similar
model Tsunami Base Station Units – a critical feature for
customers in the transportation and public safety sectors, among
others.
“Proxim’s new MP.11 roaming feature enables wireless
public safety applications, where cameras in trains, subways and
other vehicles can transfer online video streams at 25 frames per
second, or other information to a security surveillance center,”
said Harold B. Hoffman, senior consultant for Airconnect, a German-based
consultancy specializing in security and surveillance, and a senior
consultant for Siemens Security Systems, who has evaluated the roaming
capabilities of the new Tsunami release.
In addition to the new roaming capabilities, Release 2.0 boosts
subscriber density from the previous 100, to 250 Subscriber Units,
per Base Station Unit, and provides new automated features that
speed installation and improve service quality. This substantial
increase in density improves coverage for Wireless Internet Service
Providers (WISPs) looking to generate more revenue from their existing
broadband wireless infrastructure.
“The new Release 2.0 roaming capabilities are part of Proxim’s
continued innovation to meet current and emerging market and customer
needs,” said Lynn Lucas, vice president of product marketing
for Proxim. “With the addition of this important feature,
the Tsunami products can bring the benefits of high-speed, broadband
wireless access to moving vehicles such as trains and trucks, enabling
a new generation of applications for the public safety and transportation
industries, as well as mobile applications in the enterprise.”
Release 2.0 also includes a number of features to help ease installation
and management of a broadband wireless infrastructure for both enterprises
and service providers and, in particular, deliver new revenue opportunities
and improved profitability for WISPs. These additional features
include:
- New antenna alignment tool to align Subscriber Units during
installation, reducing installation time and increasing accuracy
- Built-in DHCP and NAPT support in the Subscriber Unit allowing
better use of network operator IP address allocations and costs
- Dynamic data rate selection that chooses the best transmission
rate for each individual 5 GHz Subscriber Unit, yielding better,
more consistent service quality across a given Base Station Unit
area of coverage
- Bandwidth control features to prevent the type of “bandwidth-hogging”
that commonly occurs with peer-to-peer file sharing applications,
enabling better quality of service
- Support for the newly available 5.8 GHz frequency band in
the United Kingdom, adding even more spectrum available for network
operators to deploy broadband wireless systems
“Proxim’s addition of NAT support and easy installation
features for its MP.11 products are key to delivering higher revenues
and lower operational costs as we expand our services,” said
Andrew Johnson, systems engineer at Derwentside District Council,
commonly known as DurhamNet, a United Kingdom-based ISP for schools
in County Durham, that has evaluated the new Tsunami MP.11 Release
2.0.
Proxim’s Tsunami MP.11 family offers robust and affordable
point-to-point connectivity that is ideal for metropolitan area
networks, campus networking and last mile access. The Tsunami MP.11
operates in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz license-exempt spectrums. Both
enable the immediate creation of wireless WANs for enterprises,
municipalities, schools and service providers. The new Release 2.0
roaming capabilities represent the first in a series of mobility
functions that Proxim intends to offer in future IEEE 802.16-based
solutions.
