Proxim and Last Mile Technologies Deliver First City-Wide
Wireless Network to Mount Pleasant, Michigan
Residents, Businesses Enjoy High-Speed Wireless Internet Service at Home and Around Town
Sunnyvale, Calif. and Mount Pleasant, MI, April 16, 2003 -- Proxim Corporation (Nasdaq: PROX) and Last Mile Technologies today announced the successful deployment of a city-wide wireless network for the residents of apartment complexes and businesses in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Users of the wireless infrastructure can access the Internet from their home or businesses, or take advantage of wireless hot spots and open-air coverage zones at locations around the city. Because Proxim offers a complete infrastructure solution, Last Mile Technologies is able to offer the wireless service to users at very affordable rates.
The first users of the system are students from Central Michigan University living off-campus in Mt. Pleasant. Students had previously only been able to access the university network via modem, which did not provide the speed and bandwidth necessary for many applications. There was also demand for a high-speed solution that could be included in the cost of renting an apartment. By connecting apartment complexes that house students to the Mt. Pleasant wireless network, residents of those apartments will be able to access the Internet, email and interactive learning sites at much higher speeds. Additionally, students can work wirelessly within their buildings, facilitating collaboration with classmates and allowing roommates to share an Internet connection.
Eight apartment complexes, which house 4,500 students, are currently using the wireless network, and additional apartment complexes housing another 5,000 students are slated for completion by August 2003. In addition to student residences, businesses throughout the city are signing up for Internet access via the wireless network. The Mt. Pleasant wireless network provides a cost-effective and timely way for businesses to gain enterprise-class capacity and speeds in a way that was not previously possible.
Last Mile Technologies selected Proxim as its wireless vendor because Proxim offers the only complete, integrated end-to-end wireless solution available. The Mt. Pleasant wireless network utilizes Proxim’s Tsunami Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint outdoor wireless products to provide wireless backhaul and to distribute wireless access throughout the city. The Tsunami products offer the highest-capacity wireless solutions available, making them ideal for last-mile access to the apartment complexes and businesses in Mt. Pleasant. Within buildings and at public access hot spots, users can connect to the wireless network using Proxim’s ORiNOCO802.11a and 802.11b indoor wireless LAN solutions.
“Proxim is the only company that offers the complete solution we needed, from outdoor wireless bridges to indoor user cards,” said Douglas Resseguie, director of technology services for Last Mile Technologies. “With Proxim, we were able to quickly and effectively provide high-speed wireless coverage to businesses and residents throughout the city. And, by working with a single vendor, it will be easier to manage the network and provide quality customer service to our end users.”
Last Mile Technologies will continue to roll out its service to additional students and businesses in Mt. Pleasant and intends to offer residential service in late 2003.

About Last Mile Technologies
Last Mile Technologies was created in the spring of 2002, when a couple of local businessmen linked up with a technologies group and discussed ways that they may be able to take advantage of the high demand for high speed internet connection. After acquiring a fiber optic back bone, the owners of Last Mile Technologies said that a city wide deployment of wireless service would be the ideal means to deliver high-speed internet to residents and business. After researching vendors and manufacturers, they decided that Proxim offered exactly the type of solutions they were looking for. The first step was to deliver services to the off campus housing areas surrounding Central Michigan University. The second step, which was completed in December 2002, was to create a peering relationship with the university, which allows the off campus students to connect directly into CMU’s Web servers. This allows students of CMU to upload and download files at much faster speeds and without actually having to experience bottle-necks. With this capability, students can do research and homework from home, freeing up CMU’s Labs. The next step was to provide access for local business. The final step is to deploy services to the residential community, which should become reality towards the fourth quarter of 2003.
