Proxim and Trillion Provide High-Speed Wireless Internet Access to 400,000 Students Across Seven States
$2,000,000 invested in Proxim Tsunami WWANs to link 750 schools by year-end
SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 17, 2003 -- Proxim Corporation (Nasdaq: PROX), a leading provider of high-performance wireless local area networking (WLAN) and wireless wide area networking (WWAN) products, and Trillion, a leading regional wireless wide area network and Internet access service provider, today announced that they have already wirelessly connected over 500 schools, and will connect an additional 250 this year. Trillion is using Proxim Tsunami Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint radios to provide high-speed Internet access to about 400,000 elementary and high school students throughout Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana.
Proxim Tsunami point-to-point radios are used to create a wireless loop that connects the schools to the Internet from a central localized POP (Point of Presence). Proxim Tsunami point-to-multipoint and point-to-point radios are then used to distribute the Internet connectivity among individual school systems and provide improved performance for web access, file sharing, and email. The increased bandwidth will also enable new applications like multimedia, distance learning, and voice over the wireless network.
According to the Bedford School System in Tennessee, their new Trillion wireless network saved the school system over $100,000 per year compared to the services provided by a previous ISP. Trillion insures a more dependable Internet connection with improved bandwidth. "We now have a system that enables us to better manage Internet and administrative traffic on the network," said Joan Gray, Bedford County School's Director of Technology. "With this new wireless network, our computers are now running seven times faster than before."
"We selected Proxim's Tsunami radios to provide the critical wireless links between the schools and the Internet for many reasons including price, performance and range," said Rick Rushing, Trillion COO. "Proxim's Tsunami radios give us excellent bang for our buck. Ease of installation is also important. We can get an entire wireless network up in a matter of days rather then the weeks or months required for a typical fiber or wired system. Our customers like that."
According to Rushing, "The initial opportunity arose when a rural school system sought Trillion's WAN connectivity and Internet Access services for the 13 schools after failing to find a single "traditional" communications company willing to support the district's bandwidth needs at an affordable price. When Trillion's services were installed in 1997, the school district was the first in the Southeastern United States (rural or metropolitan) to have 10Mbps WAN connectivity and high-speed Internet access to every school in the district."
From this initial rural Alabama school district, Trillion's customer base has grown significantly each year through implementing broadband WAN connectivity and Internet access for other school districts, fire departments, police departments, local government agencies, and commercial businesses of all types in the states of Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana.
"Proxim Tsunami wireless solutions provide flexibility for the service provider," said Kevin Duffy, senior vice president and general manager of Proxim's WAN Division. "Tsunami provides quick time to market, a broad range of performance options, and a quick return on investment. Trillion has done a tremendous job of capitalizing on these traits and we're excited to see their investment in Tsunami radios surpass the $2 million mark in such a short time."
The Proxim Tsunami family of wireless Ethernet bridges provides a variety of high-performance solutions to meet the growing demand for transparent, reliable, and economical high-speed network interconnectivity. They provide high-capacity, high-speed connections between buildings up to 40 miles apart and offer speeds from 20 Mbps to 860 Mbps aggregate capacity. They also include wayside T1/E1 connections, provide carrier-class 99.999% availability and operate in both license-exempt and licensed frequencies, allowing network planners to select the optimum solution for their specific application.
